AgaSaga
Hi everyone Im a new forum member and last week proudly brought home 4 new hens - 2 x Speckledy, 1 x Bluebell & 1 x Blackrock. As you can imagine im like a new mum at the moment, ive got lots of questions but managing to figure most of them out.....except this one....Do I have to trim my hens nails or will they wear down on their own? If I do have to trim them what are the best nail clippers to buy as there seem a couple of types. They seem quite long but not curling under or anything like that. At the breeders they were kept in a large run with plenty of space to scratch about. At the moment with me they are in an Eglu Cube 3m run which Im moving around on the grass but we are in the process of building them a new large run and once the electric fence is up they will free range in the garden, but realistically that will be in about a months time. Hope you can give advice. Thanks

percy049
You don't need to clip their toenails, they'll soon wear down ruining your garden! I've never clipped ours. (love the breed choices!)
TheFeatheredFiend
The breeder we bought our girls from had them in indoor aviaries on woodchip and I had noticed that their claws were long and curved and I wondered if I was going to have to trim them. A couple of them were so long that the toes were bent sideways by the curve of the claw. But just a few weeks later, after spending all day scratching around the garden their claws are neat and trim. Unlike the garden!
