lillybettybabs
Lily has become a little sluggish and nesting in the back of the run (they are still on bedmax) . I pickes her up last night and she hadn't had a lot to eat and was a little thin, She came in last night and ate some mashed egg and went to sleep. This moring she has eaten some more egg and a little mashand wormed her. Her tail is up she looks ok but just a little slow and not fussed. She has just started to lay again ( one last week) none since.
The Dogmother
Mmmm, could be anything with those symptoms. I take it that she's been wormed regularly and has no lice. How old is she? Let me know how she gets on. If you need to get her to the vet, then Clive Madeiros or David Shepherd at West Bar Vets in town are both excellent poultry vets. lillybettybabs
She's two now, I'm just going through the lice and worm investigation at the moment, I hope she'd just a little weak from starting to lay again She's still a heavy bird so i think i have noticed it quickly, My lot don't get stroppy when the a broody so it's hard to tell! The Dogmother
When you say 'heavy'..... she hasn't got peritonitis has she?
lillybettybabs
I tend to pick them up alot she feels her normal weight. She's in the hospital run so i can keep and eye on her, If she starts to go down hill and fluff up i'll get down the vets. Any other signs i should watch out for? The Dogmother
Just make sure that she's eating and pooing as normal, try to get her to have some tonic in the water or wet mash. Feel her abdomen very gently to see if she has an egg stuck. Otherwise just keep an eye on her. It's hard to tell without watching her myself, but she's too young to be 'slowing down'. lillybettybabs
Just been home for lunch and given her some yogurt, She has eaten wet mash and some dried food. Poos in run look normal but small, She is still slow moving so i'll bring her in again tonight and have another inspection whilst she's sleepy. She was very reluctant to let me inspect earlier. The Dogmother
She can't be too bad if she's putting up a fight
lillybettybabs
Sad to say it is Egg peritonitis, I felt her abdoman last night and it had a lot of liquid there. Took her to the vets this morning he has given her a 50/50 chance of getting over it, He said it's worth giving her a go as she is still very bright and well. The Dogmother
Sorry to hear that K I'm afraid that it's often a one-way-road when they get that. If she gets uncomfortable when it puts pressure on her organs, then you can either get it drained or have her PTS. I've been through this a few times in the past and on the first occasion I took the chook to Clive and he drained her, after the 2nd draining I called it a day as she was obviously suffering. Now I leave them to bimble along until it becomes obvious that the hen is affected by it and then despatch her
lillybettybabs
She has had some anti bios and i have another injection to give her on Sunday, If she starts to go down hill i'll do the kindest thing her her, She seems to want to live at the moment. I have order a large pot of maggots.
The Dogmother
That's good watch out for her going blue on the comb, or panting for breath when she sits down. Sometime, the fluid is absorbed and excreted to a certain extent, it depends largely on the cause of the peritonitis; if it is infected (egg) peritonitis then it may well be manageable for a time. Sterile peritonitis is usually caused by a tumour on the liver and isn't really treatable. I know you'll do the best thing by her but feel free to shout if you need anything/help. lillybettybabs
She has gone to bed in the spare Eglu with a full crop of maggots, The fluid has moved to nearer her vent and it feels very hot . I like to think that means it's going to drain.
The Dogmother
It will have to be absorbed first and then excreted via her liver and kidneys; there's no direct way out from the peritoneal cavity through the vent. At least at that end it's further away from her vital organs. Fingers crossed .
