Dolly
I've just noticed there's a 'splash' of blood spots on the inside of the egg port door and wall but having checked the girls, I can't see any external problems. Roxy did lay a soft egg a couple of days ago followed by a larger than normal egg the next day, but do you think could this be related and she's been injured in some way? Also, Roxy has laid an egg today but keeps returning to the nest box, is it possible that there's a piece of shell stuck inside from the soft egg the other day and she's feeling the need to try and 'lay' it? Thanks all.
Tweety
I would have thought that, if it was a bit of shell from the softie, it would have come out when she laid the large egg the following day. The size of the larger egg might have caused some bleeding I suppose. I have had occasions when I have found blood smeared on an egg, but no sign of an injury to the hens and no apparent long term problems and, mistakenly or otherwise, have put it down to a large or difficult egg. In the absence of any further symptoms, I would just keep a careful eye on your girl, but take her to the vet if you are still worried about her.
