brambles
My Cochin is still broody, albeit in a trainee yts version. I'm collecting some fertile bantam eggs at the weekend from a friend who has a lovely flock of silver laced wyandottes. How many should I set under her? Fingers crossed she continues, she's having problems remembering where she lives at the moment as I've put her in the eglu as a broody house, with a few eggs under her that aren't fertile to see if she'll stay broody. She was very keen to return to the cube tonight. I have sorts my broody sitting issues for the couple of days I may be away - my neighbor is a keen trainee chicken keeper and will ensure she is very well cared for. Daphne
I put a dozen LF orp eggs (which only a small large if you get my drift) under a big LF orp, which is a similar size to a cochin. If I was doing bantam orp eggs under a LF orp hen I'd try 15. Not sure how big a bantam dotte egg is compared to a bantam orp (which are pretty big around 55g-58g), but I'd being aiming for around 12-15, depending on the size of your hen. Just check she can cover them comfortably, thats the key thing.
brambles
Thank you. She's sitting tight today in the broody house and I'm planning to pick up eggs tomorrow and set them Sunday night once they've settled from the drive. Any thoughts on when theyll hatch if they're set Sunday night?
Daphne
21 Days - tho some bantam eggs hatch on Day 20 (or Day 22 or 23!) As you're setting them in the evening personally I'd count Monday as Day 1. People often set eggs on a Friday night/Sat morning so you get the weekend to wallow in your new chicks!
brambles
Thanks again! I'm collecting them tomorrow and we'll have an hour's drive in the car. How long should I leave them to settle after the journey - do I need to put them pointy end down for a few hours somewhere at room temp? Daphne
Really you have a choice - the sensible route would be to leave them overnight and set under her in the morning. I have, before now, put collected eggs straight in/under which is an option assuming your hen is still up when you get home, the eggs have been stored well prior to your collection and you don't drive like a maniac! If you keep them, then yes, pointy end down, in a steady temp (no drafts) preferably tepid - err on the cool side rather than the hot side. brambles
Great, thanks. She's sat tight all day, been tipped off for broody poo, food and drink and is sitting again.
