Hi

 

We have had our two lovely chickens for almost a year now, they are great with two eggs almost every day. We recently added a further two chickens, after a week of fighting etc they settled down nicely. The problem we are having is; one of the new chickens is laying the egg with no shell (the egg shell may be being eaten, although their was no evidence of any shell this morning)

 

The other new arrive is not laying at all yet but she is still quite young.

 

Any ideas what the problem could be with the chicken who is laying eggs with no shells

It sounds like she isnt absorbing calcium as much as she used to

 

A drop of cod liver oil on their pellets will help with the absorbsion of calcium, it wont do the others any harm to have it too

 

Give that a try first, you can then go down the road of trying extra calcium in their diet starting with oystershell and ending with liquid calcium but if she isnt absorbing it then those wont do any good so start with the oil

Are your new chickens quite young? What Redwing has said above about calcium still holds good, but if they are very young, they may just be getting used to laying - shell-less, soft, small or extra-large eggs are all common in the first week or two.

Thanks very much, she layed a normal but small egg yesterday. The shell was still very thin but she is getting there ....
