We were out in the garden today chickens out too scratching around and a loud noise startled one of my girls(chicken) and I think she has dislocated her leg as she won't use it and she has been laying down alot anybody got any ideas???? Chucky Mama Posted April 3, 2011 Share Posted April 3, 2011 Hens don't tend to dislocate legs, they tend to break them unfortunately. She may have knocked or wrenched it perhaps. Have you had a gentle feel along the bones of the leg? If broken the leg with be at a strange angle and/or you should be able to feel a break. If she is struggling to stand I would bring her in and keep her closely confined in a small box in the warm and quiet. If you think it is broken she will need to see a vet. Chucky Mama Posted April 3, 2011 Share Posted April 3, 2011 If it is broken what the vet does will depend on how well they think it may heal with treatment, how much you are prepared to pay for treatment and how badly broken it is. They will then, based on those factors decide whether to treat or put her to sleep. If she is settled now, have a good look at her in the morning as see if there is any improvement after a nights rest, have a good feel of the limb and then think about getting her looked at. One of ours had a broken leg earlier this year, the vet put a make-shift splint on it, we kept her confined to a cat basket, a wire mesh easy to see out of one, in the kitchen and it healed completely in 4 weeks. She continued to lay throughout the whole experience! Hope all goes well with your chicken, I am keeping my fingers crossed for you...good luck.
