peckingham palace
I'm sure this topic has been done to death, but we are new to this chicken lark. Three of my girls are laying lovely eggs, just found one in the run which was a soft shelled one. They are eating Omlet layers pellets have fresh water, access to poultry grit, a hand full of meal worms (which they love) each afternoon and corn (which they don't seem partial to), should I be worried about this and take it as a one off, or should I be doing something else? Thanks for your help
Chucky Mama
It sounds like they are getting a good balanced diet without too many treats. It might be a blip so I wouldn't worry at this stage.
peckingham palace
Thanks chucky mama, have only had them 2 weeks so still a bit OCD about making sure everything is right for them. xx
percy049
There usually is a soft shelled egg when they first start laying (my bluebelle laid soft shelled eggs for 2 weeks, then was fine). We also had a softie the other day, nothing to worry about. make sure you take the egg out though, otherwise her and the other hens might start to eat it. Chucky Mama
Good advise to remove them quickly (my dog loves them ). If they are new to laying they often lay the odd softie. I found that they were more inclined to do it if they had too many treats.
peckingham palace
Thanks again chucky mama, must admit I am possibly a bit heavy handed with the mealworms. I will reign myself in and resist the temptation to overdo it and spoil them. I love this forum, so many helpful people to pick the brains of. Its like having a chicken helpline. Thanks all x
