Sick Hen- Possible broken egg stuck inside her?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, help needed please as to what the following could be or what else I can do.

Let the hens our first thing yesterday morning, all eager as usual to get to their food and water.

A couple of minutes later, one of the hens straind as though she was going for her usual morning poo and out popped 2 inches worth of white gunk (best I can do to describe it) which remained lodged in her vent. She carried on as normal, taking on food and water but then gradually turned worse.

Later I found half a crushed egg shell in the run, no gunk left on the hen (just very messy feathers below her vent but no blood) she was hunched up with a full solid crop and continiously straining. She then made her way to the hen house where she sat in a nesting box for the remainder of the afternoon, still straining. She had been passing but it had been very runny and certainly not all poo - the smell is really foul.

So, I took the following action:

- Bathed her in warm water

- Cleaned her vent area with warm water (I've not reached inside with a finger)

- Gentley massaged her crop upwards

- Seperated her from the other hens and provided her with food and water with some apple cider vinegar (as a pick me up).

As I closed the garage up for the night she had not touched her food or water.

When I checked on her this morning, she was more alert and drinking.

Any advice or help will be much appreciated.
