Leicester_H
Hi I have 3 hens, Lily, Smokie & Boo (original Omlet girl). Boo pecked a hole in Smokie - vet - antibiotics - Smokie is now terried of Boo (OK free ranging but not confined together) - so put Smokie in separate run to recover. All OK for a few months then Lily started pulling wads of feathers out of Boo - big bloody wound (has just healed.) So (thanks to Snowy) Lily was fitted with Bumper Bit and put in 3m run with Smokie (Boo in separate 2m run to recover). Today, Lily discovered she can still pull wads of feather out and was pursuing Smokie relentlessly around the run. (Run has as many perches as possible for entertainment) - no blood yet but from experience it was just a matter of time. I have removed Lily and put her in a dog crate but this is not a long term solution. Anti peck spray had no effect. What on earth can I do ?? H PS they are fed on organic layer pellets with chicken spice, garlic powder (when I remember). I have recently been adding calcium supplement to water as Smokie has been laying a few thin shelled eggs.
Dolly
Hi Hazel When we had a similar problem I tried the beak rings (white sort of 'U' shaped things) as opposed to bumper bits which kept the beak open more and she couldn't grip the feathers at all. She could still eat and drink okay but couldn't pick up small bits off the floor so we gave treats ie corn in a deep filled bowl. Other than that have you tried Ukadex? It absolutely stinks and might help but keep an old set of clothes to wear when you apply it because it stains brown and you'll never get the smell out! Good luck.
