Gertie
Hello I've recently moved my chicken run from where it's been situated for months. I'd like to sow some grass seed but the soil is very compacted & is also slightly pink from the stalosan I used when the hens were there. What is the best approach for re seeding these patches and how do I get the grass to thrive? In the past when I tried to re sow grass I failed miserablyand it all died off! Many thanks
Old Speckled Hen
Preparation is key. If the area is really compacted you will have to dig it over then reduce the top layer to a fine tilth by using a garden sieve. You might get away with just scarifying it thoroughly. Make sure it is watered well before you sow and afterwards till germination. C&T
You might want to consider some garden lime as well, just to help neutralise the soil a bit. Good luck - we have just reseeded "chickened" bits, and it doesn't take too long!
Gertie
Thanks so much, that's really helpful. Thanks for the link to the other topic too. I shall have to start scarifying the area. I hope it's not too late to sow as it's so hot!
