Fran A
I was thinking of getting some electric fencing, just to give me even better piece of mind that my hens will be safe whilst I'm not around and so that I can leave them out of their run whilst I am working. Anyone recommend anywhere to get it, what sort of price I could expect to pay and any help really would be gratefully received
karlotta
I love my electric fences (I have two!) as they give me such a lot of piece of mind while I'm out out work etc. I bought kits with everything I needed from Flytesofancy. A 50m is about £230 or 25m for £195. You'll need to decide whether you want to power it from the mains or via a battery. I went for the battery option as I didn't want to contend with cables etc. I bought my leisure batteries from both a agricultural store (scats) and a local camping shop (pricing was comparable, but I can't remember how much!) I have 3 batteries for 2 fences so I know I'll always have one ready to swap over when I need to. My charger came from Halfords. The Hotline energisers have a handy feature that the light flashes red before they go flat (10% power less I think) so you don't get left with a flat battery and no idea. The kits from Flytes come with lots of poles but It never hurts to have more! It's much easier to get it nice and straight with extra poles! Everyone always says it's essential to keep the grass under the fence ultra short under the fence, but in practice mine isn't quite so neat, and I always get at least a couple of weeks out of the battery and (touch wood) haven't had any breaches and it certainly seems to have a good jolt when you touch it!! Can't think of anything else at the mo... but feel free to fire questions!

Fran A
Ahhh, thank you for the info!! I did consider battery powered but as one of my cat houses is almost adjacent to the chicken run and has power, it wouldn't be so difficult to have mains powered fencing, I don't think. We are currently building a new cat house and will need to get the electrician in to sort out the lighting and the power for it, so i was going to ask him about the fencing at that point. I certainly will consider battery if the mains powered will be too complicated. The solar ones look interesting. I wonder how reliable they are??
