When to let chicks outside?

Recommended Posts

My serama babies are 3 days old and 1 day old today (weird hatch! ). Anyway, they are absolutely tiny. At the moment, Vera (mum) is in a hutch with her brood. I was just wondering when it would be ok to let her out in the garden with the chicks (under close supervision, they really are tiny). I have a large cockatiel cage which I was going to use as a pen initially. I won't let the other hens out at the same time, these chicks are snack sized  Thoughts welcome :)

I tend to keep mine in their hatching hutch for 1 week. Chicks get cold very quickly, Mum has to be close by so they can quickly get back under her to keep warm. A cold chick will die very quickly.

The recent nice weather, particularly the bright warm sunshine, made my recent hatch much easier than I anticipated for an April hatch. I moved Mum and the chicks to a sectioned off area of the WIR after 10 days and they are all doing fine.

Do be aware that chicks can (and will) get through the smallest of gaps. I lost one a couple of years back, to this day I've no idea how it got out or where it went. It just disappeared one morning. I don't like to be morbid, but do be aware that if your other girls get hold of a chick, there is a high risk they will kill it and eat it :vom:.

There's no way I can let my pekins anywhere near these tiny walking snacks! I think I'll keep them hutch bound for a week or so, and then maybe let them out for a while if it's warm/dry enough. They really are tiny, so I need to rig up something completely secure and small enough that they don't lose mum

I'll get more pics tomorrow when chick 2 has woken up a bit
