Hi guys! Advice needed again! (I'm still such a newbie! )

 

It seems chicken proofing the garden is a more difficult task than my nerves can take - what with next doors hungry puppy sticking his head through the hedge and the chooks eyeing up other next doors veg patch- I'm putting the free ranging on hold and am considering alternatives...

 

currently I have a ramshackle construction using orange plastic event fencing (which is very unnatractive and not at all dog proof) so I am considering buying the Omlet netting. It seems very expensive - does anyone use it? Any tips? Or alternatives?

I'm pretty new to all this too, but have some Omlet netting and found it brilliant in cordoning off the part the girls can FR in and the parts I would prefer to keep to ourselves. I know what you mean about the expense, but it is good stuff.

hi, i bought some plastic netting from Wilkinsons and some bamboo canes. This works out really cheap and makes a decent size area. We do have 1 chicken who has discovered she can fly over it , so I then bought some green netting which is used to cover ponds or plants for 1.99 from hardware shop and have just added it to the bamboo canes as a bit of a lip.

No escapees now!

The Omlet netting is brilliant, and very flexible - it is a lot of money but I've had mine four years now and it's still in good nick, in fact last week I had some extra poles delivered so I can extend it around the veg patch. There are other options, but for me the Omlet stuff has been well worth the initial outlay.

I bought my Omlet netting just before the recent price hike. Originally had not intended to but like you my garden is leaky (although neighbours chicken-tolerant) and we are keen veggie growers and our patch cannot be easily fenced off.

The advantage of the netting is it is flexible - you can move it on your own and make it different shapes and sizes so I can move it around to protect the lawn.At least the Omlet netting looks quite attractive in the garden.

 

So far, T&L have only escaped round the edge of it when it fell over and have not thought to go over it. I have been putting them in and out of the netting by enticing them underneath so they don't get an arial view?? They try to get out by bungee jumping at the base and as long as the netting is folded so that any loose is curved inwards they just get tangled and stop.

 

Like you, I dread the day one of them thinks to jump (It will be the "Ginger Ninja", Louise) but they seem to like jumping up on to something, then jumping down.I don't have their eglu or anything else inside that they can us as a launch pad.

 

If it turns out to be ineffective for you, you can always flog it on e-bay??
