soozie1964 Posted May 8, 2011 Share Posted May 8, 2011 Hi everyone, I have ( I think ) an egg bound girly. She is walking very wide legged, her abdomen is very red and rock hard & swollen. I have sat her in warm baths twice today , to no avail. I am not at all happy or confindent to try the KY on the finger or to try and break the shell and remove it bit by bit !! Would it just be best to get her to the vet in the morning..she seems pretty OK otherwise ..eating, drinking and scratching around the garden. I am a bit of a woos with trying any thing as daring as trying to remove a stuck egg !! I would think my vet would be able to put her right ? When you say that her abdomen is hard and swollen, is it around her vent or low down between her legs? It may be that she is egg bound, or she could have peritonitis or a tumour is she is an older hen. Either way I think that you need to get her along to a vet tomorrow. soozie1964 Posted May 9, 2011 Author Share Posted May 9, 2011 Thank you all for your replies...she is only about a year old, last laid a couple of weeks ago ( but the others are not laying at the mo ) the swelling is lower than the vent .... soozie1964 Posted May 9, 2011 Author Share Posted May 9, 2011 Hi, just back from the vet...no egg in sight ! thinks she may have an abcess..so gave her dose of anti biotic and pain releif with anti inflammatory..sent us home with some Baytril. So, fingers crossed she will gradually start to feel better. She's back out free ranging with her mates and seems fine at the moment. Random_Girl66 Posted May 9, 2011 Share Posted May 9, 2011 Hi, my Queenie has a similar problem. She has been laying OK although I think she's the one that produces the double yolkers or the softies. But we have been an egg missing for two days now and she has been 'under the weather' for the same time (tail down, hunched, slow movements). She wasn't keen on me having a feel but I think she is a bit swollen near the rear so I'm sorting of guessing she may be egg bound. She's definitely not her happy self but is eating a little bit just not as much as usual and not with as much eagerness. This is my first encounter with a poorly chicken (and she's my favourite ), feel so helpless.We have an appointment with the vet tonight so I'm pining my hopes on him at the moment. If she is eggbound do chickens usually recover well? From reading other posts peritonitis is more scary - seems that even if it is relieved initially it seems to get them in the end. Not heard much about abcesses - are they usually successfully treated?
