Has anyone any idea how I can stop rats getting through the wire of the Eglu? We now bring the food in as soon as the chickens are in the garden and take them small bowls when we are in the garden with them. I lock the Eglu House during the day to stop the pesky vermin from going in. At night we remove the chickens food and water and shut the chickens in, but still the rats get into the run.

Any hints gratefully received.

thanks

Hi,

I'm afraid the only way to stop them is to get rid of them!

I had a big problem with rats last year, tried to get rid of them myself using Eradibait but without success, and eventually had to get pest control in to deal with it.

I live near a stream. Absolutely no way of keeping rats away from my garden. So, I covered my Eglu run in narrow guage chicken wire (it was hard work tying the new wire to the run, and my fingers were shredded by the end of it). I also put a roll of the wire under the Eglu itself, to stop them trying to get in through the drain hole under the nesting box.

So, I now know the rats cannot get into the run, which is a relief. I suspect the fact that they can no longer easily get to the chickens' food also puts them off hanging around just a little (think they prefer the neighbours' bird table now).
