Olly Posted May 17, 2011 Share Posted May 17, 2011 Yes, I'd recommend a small electric chainsaw like this. They are easy to use, fairly safe (although nothing is foolproof!) and will go through smallish logs, pallets etc really easily. Shop around, I got mine at Screwfix I think. Do remember to wear eye protection, keep it sharpened and topped up with oil, and be careful with what you are cutting - you are much more likely to be injured by a piece of wood flying off, half a log dropping on your foot and so on, than by the saw blade itself. I have a similar one, can't remember the exact model, and it's marvellous - makes cutting things up so much quicker and simpler than using a handsaw! Olly Posted May 19, 2011 Share Posted May 19, 2011 The chainsaw has been worth every penny - cuts through wood like a knife through butter. I'm very cautious and I secure wood in my Workmate before cutting. My brother made me a lovely sawhorse for Christmas but I haven't used it much as I feel less safe with it. I also invested in a log-splitter this year, on the basis that the wood-burner is here to stay, and I'm likely to be burning it more, not less, with the rising cost of fuel! I still use a hand-saw for small stuff. At the moment, I'm wombling bits of softwood from next-door's building work, as I need a mixture of wood for a good burn. Aunty e Posted May 20, 2011 Share Posted May 20, 2011 I might ask for one for my birthday then - the in laws like buying me massively over specced gardening equipment I can't even lift our lawnmower out of the garage it's so big and the 'small swing' they got for Imogen took us an entire day to put up and takes up the entire bottom end of the garden.
