LisaJane Posted May 18, 2011 Share Posted May 18, 2011 Hi all, My 6 month old chicken has laid an egg this morning which was streaked in blood. This happens periodically because she tends to lay too big eggs. But today I noticed her vent was a bit bloody. I washed her as well as I could with warm water with a little bit of salt in it and dried her. She is now clean but her bottom was pulsing and she seemed to be passing a little poo (no blood in poo, but a little bead of blood showing separately). She seems very quiet this morning, just resting and dozing off a bit. Normally she is manic. I am very, very worried. What should I do? Tweety Posted May 18, 2011 Share Posted May 18, 2011 Hi Lisa, Sorry to hear about your problem. How is she now? Is your other hen showing any interest in the vent area of the affected hen? You have done the right thing in cleaning her up, and don't worry about the pulsing vent - that is quite normal. If she seems to be ok, the bleeding has stopped and the other hen isn't bothering her, I would just keep a close eye on her. If not, you could bring her inside in a box tonight, and keep her warm and quiet, and see how she is in the morning. If there is still bleeding tomorrow, I think a trip to the vet is in order. LisaJane Posted May 20, 2011 Author Share Posted May 20, 2011 Thank you. She seemed much better Weds pm, no more blood. Yesterday also right as rain. But this morning she was bleeding again, and there was blood in the coop. She had laid a small egg which was still warm so not that long before I saw her. I bathed her as before and then had to leave for work. I have got a vets appointment this evening but am so scared that it will be too late. The other chicken has not showed any pecking behaviour, hopefully that will continue until I get home later. Please cross your fingers for poor Daisy.
