Help on wierd lumps!

Recommended Posts

Would be very grateful if anyone could help me with this. My black rock Bess was badly pecked by another chicken (now thankfully rehomed) before christmas and has not yet regrown her feathers. When checking her for any signs of regrowth I noticed her skin was a little red and she had a small white bump and a red lump that is about 5mm long but very thin. Could this be new feathers trying to poke though or something more sinister? the lumps are on her back just before her tail feathers. Any advice gratefully received

There is a lump at the base of a hen's tail which is the preen gland. It releases oil that they use to keep their feathers in order.

The white lumps are probably feathers growing through. The feather shaft breaks through first and then the feather will start to emerge.

Feeding her extra protein will help. Rinsed tuna in brine (or spring water( a couple of times a week will help.

Welcome to the forum btw! :D
