must chicks have grass?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I'm looking for advice as I'm hatching chicks (or Norma is) and don't know whether to put the broody ark on my single patch of grass out the front - which will disintegrate anyway, or in the back on mud/soil with the others free ranging around it. I'd prefer the latter as foxes stay away from there and they would be closer to the main flock. What do you think? Must chicks have grass?

They don't need grass however it's good practice not to have them on ground where adult hens have been as it's a disease risk for them

If you do have them on the bare soil then put down some disinfectant powder then a litter of woodchips to give them cleaner ground
