witzend
can someone tell me (better still - with pics!!) the difference in size between a normal size Wyandotte/Orp etc etc and their bantam equivalents? What size are bantam eggs compared to 'normal' (ie supermarket) eggs and do they lay same/more/less than the bigger ones? Thanks
CatsCube
It depends on the breed, orps for instance there is a huge difference size wise between the birds, Orps are about as big as they get, but the bantams are just little fluff balls, but eggs wise their isn't much difference as standard orp eggs arnt very big anyway. Chicken size often doesn't equate to egg size. For instance white stars are a very svelt chicken, and the smallest hybrid their is, however they lay whoppers of eggs. I will always have one as part of my flock, they are flighty and don't like a lot of handling, but china white eggs 7 days a week. A suggestion I would make for your 3 girls and the space you have would be a wyandotte, as you find them pretty and lay a brown tinted egg, a white star this will be your regular layer and white eggs, and an araucana for blue/green eggs. Then you have 3 similar size girls who should get on fine, fine for your space, and a nice multicolour egg basket!
