Chicks going outside?

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

When do I put the chicks outside that I have been rearing inside under a lamp? Do they just go cold turkey, or do they have to come indoors at night for a while? When they make the move, they will go in a single guinea pig hutch inside the WIR. There are two of them that will be 6 weeks next Thursday. They are getting too big for the cage in the kitchen! Many thanks for your advice :D

Hi, are they still under heat during the day, or just at night? They are old enough for you to turn it off during the day now, then off all the time in about a weeks time. They can go outside when they are fully feathered - I put mine out when they were about 7 weeks old. They may need some insulation at night outside if the temperature stays as low as it is at the moment.

Well, they are in with a 4 week and 3 week old chick, so I have left the lamp on for the younger ones, really. On a really hot day I have turned it off. Maybe next week I should take the big ones and move them to the garage without a heat lamp for a week, and then after that they can go in the run when they are 7 weeks?

If the weathers fine, i would start taking them outside during the day and bringing them in on a night, thats what i did. Then when they are around 8 weeks, leave them outside, with a snugglesafe if you have one, on a night. It wont be long now and the nights will be getting warmer anyway.

Now, i may be mistaken, i have been a bit lax just recently, but i dont remember seeing any pictures of your chicks!:whistle::whistle: hint hint
