Soft shelled egg burst while laying

Recommended Posts

Dorothy has been a bit under the weather today with a softie brewing. I've just looked out of the window to see two of the other hens pulling something out of her vent, it would appear out she's just been up to the nest box and layed egg white and yolk, at least I assume she's laid the yolk, there's a bit of yellow goo in there, so I think she's eaten the rest, but the egg has obviously burst as she laid it as it was the egg membrane hanging out of her vent.

I did (very carefully!) manage to pull a little bit more out, Bella and Rosie both having pecked some out already before I could get to her. However, I don't know if there's any more in there. I pulled out as much as I was able, she is now running round like a loon not letting me anywhere near her (quite normal behaviour  ). Clearly she's feeling better! But I'm a little concerned that there might be some more membrane left that could start an infection. If there is anything left, will she clear it out when she poos, or do I really need to be taking her to a vet to be looked at - this would seriously stress her out?

I also found some egg yolk and blood in the nest box a couple of days ago, which I am now guessing was also hers. Up until then, she had been laying really good, hard shelled eggs. I can't remember the last time she layed a softie in fact. Is there something I should give her to help or is it just an unlucky co-incidence that this has happened twice in a few days? I have some liquid calcium that I do sometimes give when the hens lay a few softies, but this seems a bit different as the membrane has also burst twice. Would it help?

All the hens finished a course of Flubenvet on Sunday, so worms aren't the issue.
