chickweed
I've just returned home after 3 weeks away to discover the top of my potatoes gone. Before I went away the tops were dying back, so the potatoes were ready for digging up. Not having the time to do this, I planned to do this on my return. The potatoes in the ground are untouched but there is absolutely no sign of stalks or leaves, in fact the ground is perfectly flat, neat and tidy. I've ruled out birds taking it for nesting material as they would have had to pull and maybe disturb the soil and maybe lift a potato or two. Onions which were also ready for lifting are untouched and also the runner beans. My veg plot is surrounded by netting and was undisturbed. My neighbours have seen a hedgehog in their garden which is something new. Any ideas folks?
