ashjc
My chicken laid an egg yesterday, whilst on the roosting bars (she wont go in the nest box since I put wood shavings in it instead of straw, even though I have changed it back to straw) The egg was golden yellow but had no shell at all, not even a thin translucent one. Anyone else experienced this?... she had laid a perfect one the day before
Olly
yes, and it's quite normal especially with younger hens who are just coming into lay. If it's a persistent problem then you can try adding supplements to their feed, but if it's a one-off I wouldn't worry. I would clear it up quickly though if you see it happen again, as the hens will eat it, it won't do them any harm but they may get a taste for their own eggs then! ashjc
Cheers Olly, yes I cleaned it out straight away last night when I got home from work... didnt want her getting a taste for it... gutted though as it was golden yellow like we have not had from them before... must be the increased free ranging time we are giving them.
