We got 6 ex-batts 4 weeks ago and they have all settled really well so far and are growing lovely new feathers etc. Last week I noticed one of them has a jaundice like yellow face but seems otherwise completely fine. Yesterday Myrtle (different chook) was very subdued sleeping in her favourite spot most of the day, saw her drinking but not eating and at bedtime last night couldnt feel anything in her crop so feared the worst. She seemed brighter this morning and at midday when I checked she dashed out to free-range with her mates and was digging for worms quite happily. Later on tho she seemed subdued again and was perching outside and closing her eyes. I checked and her crop was about half the normal end of day size for the other birds but at least she has eaten something. The only thing I noticed was that one scale on one toe is raised a bit and her scales do seem ever so slightly more pronounced than usual but when I googled scaly leg the photos were dramatic compared to what I see on her - does it start off barely noticeable or am I barking up the wrong tree. Newtothislark Posted October 11, 2011 Author Share Posted October 11, 2011 Update - a soft shell egg and regular egg under the roosting bars this am (not laid there before) so I guess this could have been the problem? Shes still very quiet tho so if it was a soft shell problem how long would it take for her to perk up? Also noticed a slight purplish tinge to the edge of her comb - should I take her to the vet or see how she goes ....? Anyone pleeeease? Egghead68 Posted October 11, 2011 Share Posted October 11, 2011 Sorry - quick reply as at work. They usually perk up immediately after laying a softie unless they have got another one on the way too. Bluish tinge to comb can indicate infection or heart probs - might be worth getting her checked over by vet in case she needs antibiotic.s Single-raised scale does not sound like scaley-leg. Newtothislark Posted October 11, 2011 Author Share Posted October 11, 2011 Thanks for your advice, took her to vet this afternoon and he couldnt find anything specific but said she is very thin Has given her antibiotic shot and antibiotics for me to give her for a week. He said it may help it might not - so fingers crossed. She perked up a little this afternoon and was out free ranging again but then went all subdued again later so will just wait and see I guess.
