another ill chicken - [update] happy ending!

Recommended Posts

goodness, just only monday morning we had to put our eldest ex batt to sleep due to sour crop and now one of our other chickens has fallen ill. however, our Sookie seems to be suffering from something entirely different and something slightly more worrying.

due to the freezing cold weather we decided to keep the chickens inside their eglu, after fetching them from outside to bring them in for the night, we noticed our Sookie was acting rather strangely: hobbling side to side, feathers fluffed up and slightly disorientated.

she was rather cold, so decided to give her a quick cuddle (which isn't something she allows us to do, so instant alarm bells were going off), then set her back down on the ground and she instantly perked up, and was back to the usual Sookie we know and adore.

however, just an hour ago the symptoms she was suffering from worsened. now, not intending to be dramatic, but it was as if she had suffered from a stroke (it was that bad); couldn't keep herself propped up, walking on CURLED claws, tail down, highly disorientated, fast heartbeat, temperature and not eating and drinking.

luckily, we had some metacam and anti-biotics lying around from our last vet visit (for our chicken that got put to sleep recently), so without hesitation we got that down her.

Sookie has now been sitting on my mums lap, for about half an hour, panting with her beak wide open. the good news is, she's gulping down the freezing cold water we're feeding her via a syringe and she's slightly more alert.

opinions would be highly welcomed and appreciated, we couldn't more worried. it's certainly not helping that we're still incredibly raw from the death of our first chicken, dolly.

i just hope to god she's not on her way out.

thanks a lot!

just a little update -

after setting sookie down on her bed in the utility room, we've noticed she's acting more chicken like  however, her wings are spread wide open (i'm guessing this is a sign she's too hot) and she's still got her beak open.

we've fed her a lot of water and now holding an ice pack against her - she's in heaven!

so, i think she'll be fine throughout the night  but tomorrow we'll take her to the vet asap, just to get everything checked over.

the medication has obviously kicked in and she's got fighting spirit to say the least!

god... our luck isn't all that fantastic at the moment

she was egg bound the whole time! took her outside to help with the temperature and mum felt something leaking, gave her bum a little check and noticed there was an egg sack! pulled it out and it instantly gave her relief, she's now back to her old self and gone straight sleep (eggausted) !:clap:

we literally jumped with joy when we found out what the cause was and we now feel like getting out a bottle of champagne and celebrating (think we will, especially since it's my dad's birthday today  ).

jees...5 hour labor, who would've known

feel rather stupid but the problems she was suffering from just didn't add up (apart from the fact she wasn't walking properly) can't believe it...

thanks everyone! :)
