Mystery illness - help needed

Recommended Posts

I have a strange situation with my three year old hen Margot which I wondered if anyone can shed any light on.

Last Tuesday morning I found her in the nestbox, wing outstretched. She was unable to stand or perch, had a high temperature and was panting. The vet thought she had a bacterial infection and gave her baytril and an anti-inflammatory injection. Within a couple of hours she was back on her feet and behaving as normal. The same days she also laid an egg, her first in around four months.

We continued with twice daily Baytril until exactly the same thing happened yesterday morning – unsteady on her feet, high temperature, panting. Took her to the vets again and got another anti-inflammatory shot. A few hours later she laid another egg (the first since the previous week). This morning she is looking much brighter and is desperate to be reunited with her sisters.

Does anyone have any experience of a similar situation? I know that the egg laying coinciding with the episodes may be coincidental but it does look suspicious.

Thoughts appreciated

are the eggs really big?

there is a nerve that effects the legs that an egg passes...

the panting might be as she is making a huge effort to get it out....

but it is clearly not right...

I don't know what the answer might be.

Maybe if you say what breed she is someone that knows can advice you if she is at the end of her laying life, (eggs get bigger as they get older I do know that,)

IF this is the case I would personally consider having her implanted or regular delvosterone injections to stop her laying altogether.

Hopefully someone else will offer some thoughts.
