tanyag
I have 5 girls, housed in an Eglu Go inside a 6'x9' WIR, I have had them since Feb 2011. They do get out to free range for an hour or two a day, but are usually quite happy in the run with perches/pecking block etc. I use Aubiose as flooring so they can scratch around and make dust baths. They all developed bare bums, and I caught a few culprits pecking feathers. As we had previously lost a young bird who was pecked to death, I decided to fit bumper bits to all 5. I had tried anti pecking spray for a couple of weeks and it made no difference. I know a lot of people are judgemental about the bits, but I was not prepared to go through our previous experience, and I researched well before making the decision. For a few weeks all was well and fluffy bums were back, however two of them now have bare bums again! Bumper bits are still in place and they are all well in themselves. Still laying most days (except in the snow), no change in food etc. Any ideas as I am at a loss what to do? I can't separate them without risking foxes. Eggasperated
My Black Rocks always managed to go back to feather plucking once they had got used to their bumper bits (I've given up on the bits now), have you watched them to see if this is the case with yours? tanyag
Thanks - I will keep an eye on them to see if that's the case, although I suspect it is happening in the nest box at night. It is the two lower ranking girls who are bare just now.
