Prickle
Hi all, I am new here and found this forum when googling for info on the implant Suprelorin One of my beautiful girls has the implant and has been receiving it for about 18 months, she is now on the 12 month one so gets a new implant approximately 6 monthly. She had major laying issues with soft and shell-less eggs and binding, and on the implant she has been wonderfully healthy. She went through that initial hard moult, but physically she has been well ever since. Her personality has completely changed, though She used to be top of the pecking order and a real sweetheart, cuddly and loving. Now she is bottom of the pecking order and after her last implant has become quite the grouchy ice queen! She wants to be alone alot and goes to roost very early compared to the others, and when being cuddled she often bites me, which she would NEVER have done before. She doesn't seem to like me any more She tolerates my affection but there is no pleasure in it for her. When on the roost she 'growls' and pecks, and she seems to be at her grouchiest at night time (I have lights in the coop and often clean up and feed/water change at night time, I have always done this, then plop everyone on the roost and give goodnight kisses - just not to Prickle any more). Is this just because of the hormones, like major PMS? Her plumage is beautiful and she is eating well and preening well, and still gets along with her sister, but she is grumpy with the other 2 hens and often with me. I love her so much! I just wish I had my sweet Prickle back
Prickle
Oh - she is a Hyline Brown - a hybrid layer
Egluntyne
It will most likely be the implant. Her hormone balance will have shifted back to what it was before point of lay, so she will become more skittish and less bidable.
Prickle
Actually now that I think of it, yes, she is rather like she was as a young pullet only grumpier Is there anything I can do or supplement her with to ease her 'pre egg tension'? I know of chaste tree berry but unsure if it would be safe to use with a hormone implant? She is a pet hen. Would keeping her away from the other girls help or hinder do you think? I am prepared to have her as a house chicken if it might make her happier. I just adore her ..

Egghead68
Mine are more subdued on the implant - rather like my pure breed is when she is not in lay. They aren't grouchy though - just less aggressive around food, mainly.
