dating eggs and keeping period

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have now purchased my 3 amber links and waiting like an expectant mother for my first eggs, thought it happened the other day but seemed i got over excited by an apple from a distance lol.

They are now 20wks old so i may still have afew weeks to wait. I was wondering how long eggs can be kept for after being laid as im one of those that has only ever brought dated eggs, and ive always been funny about goin by dates on any foods lol, also the best way of rotating or dating eggs if im wanting to sell afew to family to cover for their food ?

Same here - pencil the date on, and keep them out of the fridge (on an egg skelter, in my case). I save my oldest eggs, strange as that may sound, because if you want to make meringue or anything that requires whisked egg whites, or if you want to hard-boil them, it's better if they are at least a week old. New-laid eggs are lovely on toast etc but the whites are much thicker than you'll be used to in shop-bought eggs, and they don't whisk well.

They will certainly keep up to three weeks, mine never stay around that long.

well thats good to know, i must say it is so nice to have this forum to be able to come and ask for advise from people with their own experiences of keeping chickens and learning different ways of doing things.

Ive only had my chickens since this tuesday evening and im already planing to build them a bigger run 12ft long to run round in.
