Feeder doors keep closing when I walk away

It's my Mum's birthday and she is one of those hard people to buy for, unless you go for the obvious smellies.

 

Years ago I remember her looking into doing one of thise writing course things you see advertised in magazines. Has anyone done one or know if they are any good? She is relatively housebound and gets so frustrated and bored so I thought it might be something to give her an interest.

Never tried one myself, but my friend bought her mum a course a few years ago, and she really enjoyed it. She's tried some Mills & Boon novels, without success so far but she has not given up.

 

I think if you bought one of these hoping to write a best-seller, then you might be disappointed, but if it's for someone like your mum, to give a bit of focus to something that she's always wanted to do, it could be a good solution.

I'll try and find out which one my friend bought.

They are called 'Creative Writing Courses'. Look at your local Adult learning centre/college. Or google. There are also residential courses available. Try looking at Missingdon Abbey in Buckinghamshire they run fab courses at Easter and summer.

She wouldn't do a residential course. To start with she wouldn't have the confidence and with her mobility issues does struggle with stairs etc. and can't really sleep in your everage bed.

 

I have dug it out and the one I had seen was the writers beaurea (sporry can't spell it, obviously I am not the writer of the family )

 

She certainly wouldn't be going into it with the idea she was going to sell her writing and make a fortune, it's more that I want to try and give her an interest, something of her own that she can do.

 

There is a cancellation option on it so I think I am going to sign her up.

If she stayed at the Abby which is not cheep though they cater for disabilities. I have seen people with extreem physical disabilities. You don't have to be an expert at anything there. Most people are old as they are the ones with time and money. The meals are excellent and in the evining you can sit in the bar or longe and chat , they also lay on talks etc in the evening. The college I taught at sent me there for staff delepoment and I had fantastic times and it was paid for. I can't spell either.

An alternative to a course might be a subscription to a magazine eg Writing Magazine. Their website is: www.writers-online.co.uk. They also run their own courses.

I did an Open University short course, which was on-line based. Following that, I did a "proper" Creative Writing unit - this was mainly on-line, but also included some face-to-face tutorials (and a real text book!) I enjoyed both, though the second one was quite hard work.
