Willow Garden Screening (or similar)

Recommended Posts

I need to screen off a fence at the end of my garden. This fence belongs to my neighbour and is 4ft high with 2ft trellis on top to make a 6ft fence, and it runs the whole width of my garden which is 9m.

This is going to sound incredibly anti-social, but my neighbour (who is very pleasant I should add) does like to stand and chat at the fence, peer through the fence and generally wander past the fence all day... as do the various members of his family who visit every day and spend time in the garden. Basically, I would really like some privacy!

Has anyone used the willow screening (or bamboo/reed/brushwood etc) up against a fence? If you have any photos, that would be excellent as I would really like to see what it looks like in situ. Hubby seems to think it won't be a very attractive option, but I fail to see how it can be any less attractive than a fence! Is it sturdy enough to withstand strong wind? Can you grow plants up it?

To me, it sounds like the perfect solution to my problem as it will provide an instant screen, rather than waiting for a climbing plant or hedge to grow. Also, as it is my neighbour's fence and not mine I don't want to grow anything up against it. Any thoughts?

Hi LB

I used 5 or 6 ft willow panels in my last garden to screen off growing area. They were like hurdles. I liked them, although they were quite a dark colour, they weathered to lighter quite quickly. I grew an evergreen honeysuckle up over an arch I put in the middle (will try to find photo - might be a distance shot - if you PM me with ur email address I'll send it, always takes me hours to upload photos on here!)

I also had reed screening which I never used, but I think that may be a bit more see through and quite flimsy. The willow was quite obscuring!

Can't quite recall price, possibly £50 or so each. I got them from primrose timber London.
