Swollen wattles

Recommended Posts

I wonder if anyone has seen this before?

Suzy Blacktail has swollen wattles, and a swollen chin. It looks as though she has "chicken-mumps"! She seems otherwise well, and her wattles are not discoloured. The chickens FR - I wonder if she has just been in some nettles or something, and hope it won't turn out to be more serious. We haven't noticed anything else odd in the other 9 chickens.

Any ideas/advice appreciated - it will be the vets on Monday if she deteriorates, but we've never needed the vet before (in 7 years of chicken keeping they have either been well, died suddenly or of old age, or it has been obvious what was wrong) so don't know whether the vet knows much about chickens anyway.

Thanks Plum

Yes, she could have done pretty much anything, although there was no sign of a wound or scratch. They are very happy country free-range chickens and do get into the odd s"Ooops, word censored!"e. I can't actually find them at the moment, they are probably in the woods somewhere behind the houses ...

Suzie is just the same today, we will take her to the vet for antibiotics if it looks bacterial (red, angry, hot), or if she seems ill in herself - I now think maybe she lost an argument with a bee or wasp, which are just coming out into the sun. She is eating, drinking and laying, and was second-in-line for treats this morning as normal!
