WIR / electric fencing advice for newbie

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am looking to get a cube with a WIR made by Averies for U as we are moving to a house where I can finally keep chickens, The WIR will probably be 15 x 6 ft or possibly 12ft by 9ft (with kick board and sloped roof) depending on space and final layout of the garden.

I am at a loss at what to put the run on as I am worried about getting it level, and would like some ideas of what others have done :D, I must add my Hubby and I are very enthusiatic but dismally rubbish at most DIY hence getting a run made.

We back on to a farm ,so I think letting my chickens ( when I get them ) free range would be really stupid, so

I would love to get electric fencing and allow them out most of the day, and keep them in an area away from the kids slides/swings, but would need to keep it turned off when the kids are in the garden and would need to be stored easliy and be battery powered, I'm not sure how easy it is to do this! ( I have no expereince of electic fencing and anyone with experience of Kids (under 5) and electric fencing it would be great to hear your experiences.

I am so looking forward to getting chickens, I am like a kid at christmas, I grew up with Chooks in Africa but they were kept very diffrently then over here so I really am clueless about fencing/runs and most other things, so apologies for all the rambeling and jumping from one question to another.

Thanks

Kyla

Don't have any young children but I have used electric fencing for the last two years. It does really need to be a semi-permanent set up as it can be a bit of a pain to take completely down too often. Ours is battery powered, you need to use leisure batteries really as these can stand being regularly charged and discharged, complete kits are available from lots of places on the Internet and this includes an energiser and earth rod as well as the fencing. It is very easier to disconnect the battery if you don't want the fence on when the kids are about, but, as I said, you wouldn't really want to be continually taking the fence itself down.

Hope this helps :D .
