3.6m Omlet Chicken Run for sale, Brand New in Boxes, Milton Keynes (MK19)

Hi all

 

I was hoping to get a Cube, but I stumbled upon a second hand Classic for sale for £50 and it seemed too good an opportunity to pass by! It needs some parts (roosting bars, locking pin for the door and a lock for the side), but from what I can see, those things will cost me around £20 so it's still a great buy. I'm going to order them from Omlet.

 

Before I add the new parts and get some hens, I want to clean it thoroughly and treat it for mites, just in case. I've had a good look and can't see any, but I want to be careful. What products would you recommend to get the Eglu ready for our hens?

Wow, that really is a bargain . You could use Poultry Shield for a good clean out (and a power washer is great for blasting everything out of the nooks and crannies, if you have one). I sprinkle Diatom around all the crevices and I usually put some Red Mite powder in the nesting material too. Horse bedding is great for the nestbox and also for ground cover (I use Easibed).

 

You mention a locking pin for the door - did you get a run with it too? That is a tremendous bargain if you did .

Yes, it came with a run! It's just the basic run but with the money I've saved, I can buy an extension. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the ad. I called Onlet and spoke to a really nice guy who had a look at the ad while I was on the phone and confirmed that it was a mk2 and that I could order the missing parts. He said it was such a bargain he might even try to beat me to it and buy it himself!

 

I have no idea where to buy mite powder, etc. but I will google local suppliers. Can't wait to get some hens now! My friend has recommended Bluebells and Rhode Rocks. My 12 yr old really wants a Silkie but I'm concerned about keeping it dry in Scotland and about it going broody. Any thoughts?

No shortage of enthusiastic chicken-mad people on here . You'll find all the advice, help and encouragement you'll ever need on this forum .

 

There are at least 2 Scottish Omleteers who have silkies - LolaLayla in Troon and Sparkysmum in Dunblane - I'll point them in the direction of your post. R & A Lovatt has a good reputation and is an authorised dealer for Black Rocks. Ballencrieff Mains Farm is probably a bit too far for you (Longniddry, east of Edinburgh) but he has a few nice breeds too - that's where most of my girls came from.

 

If you have any horse supplies places near you, that's often a good place to pick up poultry supplies.

I had to drive past Longniddrie to pick up the Eglu! I've found a few breeders/suppliers down in Ayr, which isn't far from me. I'm waiting on one of them getting back to me.
