tinaduffyjames
My 3 Omlet chickens are 2 1/2 years old now and over the past month their egg production has really slowed down. I dread having to start buying eggs again. As I now only get 1 egg a day it really is looking like its going to be shop eggs from now on. Of course I could use it as an excuse to buy more chickens but I only have an Eglu (in a walk in run). Wonder if Father Christmas will bring me a Cube? Olly
If your walk-in run is big enough, you could add a couple more ... five can easily sleep in an Eglu.
Ain't Nobody Here
I agree . I have 5 (and have had 6) in an eglu in a WIR. They all sleep on perches anyway so just use the eglu to lay although they have all slept in the eglu together in the past. More chickens for you . tinaduffyjames
Do you really think 5 will fit in the Eglu? If this is the case - fantastic. I can feel the excitement building already hee hee. The WIR is 15x10 ft and then they have daily access to a 4x10ft patch of what once was grass but now is just mud and woodchip. Plus occasionly they escape on to the garden just to dig up my newly seeded lawn! Naughty chickens. I always thought the eglu wouldnt take more than 3 hens? I suppose they do huddle up together and 2 more would be able to squeeze in. I have a perch across the full width of the run too. I truly believed that I would have to wait months and months till either I won a small fortune to buy a cube or wait till my ladies were no more before I thought about any more. Woop woop. I'm so excited. Now , which ones to have next?
Ain't Nobody Here
The only issue would be if they were all laying and the nestbox got a bit busy but as 2 of yours aren't laying anyway, that shouldn't be a problem. I get 4 eggs a day and as they don't sleep in the eglu, I've put a second nestbox (a plastic Ikea tray) in the eglu which they all lay in, ignoring the "real" nestbox . Have fun choosing . sparkysmum
Have to agree, I've had eight sleep in my old eglu, completely ignoring their lovely new cube. Daft things
tinaduffyjames
No guesses as to what I'll be doing this weekend. I have a plastic pet carrier which I can put in as an extra place to lay but as Aint "Ooops, word censored!"ody Here said, as I only have 1 laying, it may not be a problem. My children will be glad of more eggs, 1 egg between 2 children does not quite work My husband works nights so will have to wait till morning to give him the happy news. Somehow, I think he may not be as enthusiastic as I lol
