Don't know if it helps but I don't close the door of the coup at all - not even in the winter (unless it's totally freezing out there) so they go to bed and get up whenever they want to. I do close the door to the run so that the fox can't get at them.

I've been watching our girls and they seem to roost about half an hour after sunset and get up about half an hour before sunrise. Problem is this gets later or earlier, of course, depending on time of year. So i don't shut the coop at all (except in very cold weather last winter) but I do get them in or let them out of the secure run at a time that suits me. At the moment it's about 9.30 pm and about 6 a.m. They are fine and secure in the run and can suit themselves about roosting time.
