Uma
I am really thinking about getting a few ducks soon. And I wondered if you could tell me what you think of my set up. I have a stable for my shetlands, made from a converted garage. The stable is at the back and I was planning on putting the ducks into the front part. Its about 4 m by 4 m. Its a concrete floor and I have an eglu I would put in too as well as straw/sawdust on the floor for them. I would let them out to free range all day and only put them back in the stable if we were out or at night time. However, if we are away on holiday I don't like my girls freeranging so they stay in their walk in run, and I'd ideally keep the ducks in the stable too. There is a lot of light as there are grates over the bottom doors (the poinies are small), but do you think this all sounds ok? Many thanks, Uma x
Chortle Chook
How many ducks would be getting and what breeds? The arrangement might be a bit overwhelming for wee call ducks but sounds perfect for runners, however someone like Redwing would be a better authority than me. Uma
Hi thanks for replying. I was thinking two ducks, ideally an appleyard and a campbell but it depends on what I can source. Uma x
Chortle Chook
I'm sure your set up would be fine for just two and what nice breeds you are planning. I particularly like the Appleyards; they are so pretty. I'm not sure where you are located but if you are in the Berkshire or Oxfordshire area then Acorn nursery certainly had some Appleyards and some Campells when I was there just before the Jubilee. They sell firtile eggs, wee ducks and biggies though the biggies are sometimes in short supply so I'd advise making a phone call first. If it takes you a bit of driving to get there then you could always have tea in their new tea room which is really nice with their home made scones. Uma
Thanks, it would take more than a bit of driving though as I'm in West Scotland...!! Hoping to find suppliers somewhere round here. Uma x
