not sure whether to take the plunge...

Not only the boys, but what about the ones that are deformed or in pain?

"If you cant dispatch, dont hatch"

For autosexing boys, we see if we can rehome, generally we cant and they are dispatched either straight away, or after a few weeks, unless they look like they might be good quality breeding cocks.

My thoughts on the subject are:

If you cant dispatch have someone readily available who will do it for you

if you cant face handing them over to be dispatched then perhaps its not for you

I personally dont think that everyone who hatches has to do the actual task of dispatching but must be a realist who understands that most cockerels dont find lovely homes

If you want to increase your flock then getting some youngsters is a lovely idea. If you simply want to have the experience of hatching its worth approaching local breeders to see if you can hatch some eggs and pass the youngsters back to them

A forum member hatched some chicks for me last year, it was a good experience for them and the chicks came back to me at about 6 weeks old. One went on to be one of my show birds and the forum member loves getting updates on 'their' bird :D - a very positive experience all round

In answer to your question about what do people do with the boys.

If I can't find them a vetted good home, I grow mine on until they start to crow and then they become dinners.

I do the deed and prep them myself. I went on a dispatch course to see if I was capable.

I'll be honest, it doesn't get any easier, and needing to dispatch a deformed chick was a horrendous experience. But on balance, its worth it to raise my girls from the egg stage :)
