jeshen
My buff pekin, Golda has been bringing up a lone chick, now nearly 5 weeks old, which looks like a Frisian. I think the chick might be a good flyer. Golda is now desperate to leave the small run with broody cage she shares with the chick, to join her 3 mates who all free range in the garden. First question: is it too early to let Golda and the chick out to FR? I suspect Golda would not return to the small run at night but would join her friends in the eglu. Second question: is it too early to clip the chick's wings, which are well-feathered?
sjp
I FR broodies and chicks from about 4 days old but I know my modb are OK with with chicks. so at 5 weeks old your's should be fine FR but I'd let mum and chick out on thier own a few times first and they should go back into the broody pen as that been home for about 8 weeks. as for flying as long as you have a good height fence it should be ok for a few weeks just check for holes under the fence that a chick can get through anything more that about 2"x2" wing clipping at 5 weeks is more than likely very short term as the chick will be growing new feather again soon
jeshen
Thanks sjp. I did let Golda + chick out to FR today. Lovely to see how he/she loved the outdoors! Had to watch Siân, one of the other pekins, though, who gave her a peck or two when she thought I wasn't looking. Siân seemed to settle after a bit, but I kept watch all the time they were out!
