Stevie Adams
Hi I just wondered if it's possible for a chicken to be egg bound without having any symptoms? One of our girls had a bit of a messy bum the other day and appeared to have something hanging from it - last time I saw this was when Patsy was egg bound and it was actually a shell fragment. The bit that was hanging seems to have been gone, although her bum is still a bit messy. She hasn't laid for a few days either. With Patsy, you really could tell she was under the weather, she wouldn't eat or drink and would just sit down all day. I did think that she may have passed the egg, but I haven't seen any evidence of this. I'm keeping an eye out on her and hoping that she's okay, but any advice for other things I can check? There doesn't appear to be anything hard in her. Perhaps it's not even this - I'm just paranoid because it was so traumatic the last time I had this problem. Even though she made a full recovery (but nevertheless died a year later with another egg related problem)
Daphne
If a bird is egg bound you can tell - as you say they tend to either sit and mope or stand with their tails down, sometimes straining to pass the egg. Your girl may have passed a soft egg, which is why you saw a bit of something hanging from her vent, but usually they mope with this as well as they are feeling off colour, although they do then bounce back again quite quickly. The only other thing I can think of is that she has had a prolapsed vent, which isn't very good news. However, if she is acting normally, eating and pooing, with no swollen belly and no obvious prolapse, then I'd just keep an eye on her unless she has some other obvious symptoms. Check her over thoroughly for lice and mites, and check the house for red mites. If she is being a bit lethargic they could be the reason. Smileygem
Hi does anyone have any more thoughts on this as it sounds similar to one of my chickens. She hasn't laid for about a week but we had been having a lot of fox visits and I thought perhaps she was distressed by this and therefore wasnt laying. Now I'm noticing some runny poos, a dirty bum and still no eggs. She has been egg bound before and it doesnt seem like that as then she was hunched and walking funny, obviously off-colour whereas now she seems absolutely fine. The other one seems fine and they have both had Verm-X the last few months so it shouldnt be that. Any ideas?

I would suggest worming with Flubenvet. It's a highly effective wormer, whereas many people on the forum don't rate Verm-X.
