vent pecking

Recommended Posts

Hi

i have noticed my 3 amberlinks , 2 of them have been pecked round near the vent, one is just a tiny but round th e vent and the other is about a inch below the vent its been pecked and its quiet a large area. did notice one of the chickens having a peck the other night. they havent ever showed pecking towards eachother before and just wondered why this might be they have been in half of the run as we have been trying to intergrate 2 colmbines.

i did wonder if it was one might of had abit of muck near its vent which attracted the chicken to start pecking but they are normally quiet clean round there. i tend to check because it can attract flies.

any help , advise is appreicated

Do you mean they have plucked the feathers out around the vent? It's a popular area for feather-plucking, not sure why but possibly because it's the bit available when the other chicken isn't looking/is getting away!

It's quite likely that this is due to stress because they have less space, or because there are new hens in sight. It may improve once you've integrated the other hens, but you could try anti-peck spray on the ones being pecked. Provided there's no bleeding it won't do any harm, it looks unpleasant and it must be a bit painful for the pecked hen but they don't seem too bothered by it.
