Jennifer Jane
Yesterday saw the arrival of Buddy. She belonged to a colleague's sister but sadly Buddy's friend died recently, she was left as an only hen and her owner didn't want to get any more. In May we were blessed with Paige, Red and Boop who were my niece's ex-batts - due to family circumstances she was finding it difficult to look after them. I sometimes think that the fact that they are the noisiest hens in the world may have had something to do with it... It's early days but Buddy seems to have a sweet nature and is very laid back. She has beautiful auburn feathers. She does seem to be losing a few round her neck - the start of a moult perhaps? She doesn't seem to be scratching or over-preening and looks otherwise healthy, but I will keep an eye on her. It's the first time we've introduced a single hen and I do feel guilty for keeping her apart. We did let her out with the others for a few minutes at treat time last night - the hens were all happily engaged in eating and only Boop seemed to be paying undue aggressive attention to the newcomer. I'm hoping that the intro will be fairly speedy and painless, we'll just have to see.
