slab & brick base- secure enough from digging??

Recommended Posts

Hi, we are about to construct the base for my WIR which i have just ordered (yippee) and as we have a lot of brick from making changes to our new house, I was planning on using the brick and some slabs to construct a floor for the WIR. I would have the edge of the WIR standing on slabs/bricks and the floor would be tightly laid but not concreted or fixed in any way. my question is, would a fox be able to dig under the edge if the bricks arent fixed in? are they likely to try it? i was thinking i may have to put some chicken wire underneath the slabs and bricks around the edges to create a bit of a skirt but i want to plant climbers up the WIR and need to have these close to the WIR if possible. Or do you more experienced people think that the fox would be put off when it found the almost-solid floor?

thanks!

My run is stood on a 'ring' of slabs and I have had no problems, it might depend if your soil is very soft and sandy but I would think that the slabs would be sufficient. Foxes are not natural diggers (unlike, say, badgers) and it would take them quite a while to dig under a slab edge - I doubt if they'd do it in one night.

thanks Olly, i think we will go ahead without the wire then (saves a trip to wilkos today!!) and monitor the situation, not seen any foxes around here but back on to farmland so know they are around (probably the smell of cat is not as tempting as the smell of chicken will be when the girls arrive!).

off outside now to get started :)
