Ammonia smell in cube

Recommended Posts

I never noticed this with my bigger girls, but with the youngsters the cube seems to smell of ammonia. The little ones do seem to poop a lot more than my bigger girls did and I spend my life poo picking! They sleep in the poo trays so I use quite deep sawdust on these - pick out the poo and any obviously soggy sawdust each day and change twice a week, with a full cube clean weekly. I put a little bit of bokashi bran in the sawdust and DE as well. Is the smell normal? Worried they will get damaged lungs or burns but not sure what to do to neutralise! Will bio dry or something help.

Also, I have seen a few pinky tinted poos that look like the gut lining type ones but seem a bit more frequent than I expected, thinking of taking sample to vets to check but as its a bank holiday won't be til Tuesday - should this happen in youngsters (9 - 14 weeks)? Last question, does anyone know if nettex kills oocysts?

Sorry for the Spanish inquisition!

Pinky poop is fine (I worried about that too till I googled types of poop  ). I use horse bedding with a sprinkle of biodri and a fluff of diatom, poop picking or emptying in morning. The youngsters do tend to go for quantity rather than quality, as it were, overnight.
