Very very nervous new piggies - please help!

Recommended Posts

Hello! I've just got my first two piggies! Two little girls, supposedly about 6 weeks old. I'm really worried because I've had them for about 24 hours and all they have done is hide in their bedroom :( I expected them to be nervous, but I'm worried that they are not eating / drinking. They just seem to huddle up together and not really move at all. I have held them and gently checked them, and I have to say that apart from being terribly nervous and reluctant to actually move around, they seem well enough. I have read that it takes a while before they feel brave enough to explore.... it is too early to worry?? I'd be very grateful for any piggie-expert advice!

Thank you! x

Hello, really sorry as I'm far from an expert! We got our first pigglies yesterday  and ours are very nervous too and won't venture out of the Eglu and into the run. They are older though, about 6 months old (they were the ones that no one else wanted in the pet shop!). I haven't tried enticing them out yet, though think I'll put some toys / tunnels in the run for them to see if that will tempt them. :D

Young GP's are naturally very nervous. In our experience, if you give them somewhere to hide, like a shoebox or similar, they will use it for just that! Most of ours have lived indoors and we found that just covering a corner of the indoor cage with a towel gives them somewhere to run to when they want. Gradually reduce the amount of coverage over a period of time and they will get used to it. Works with young ones but have also done this successfully with a very nervous adult that came to us for rehoming.

My two boys seem to be getting a bit more used to us.....but they still don't want to go out in the eglu run!

I put them in it yesterday while I changed the bedding in the eglu and they looked perfectly happy and seemed to be enjoying themselves but as soon as the eglu door was open again they went back in and stayed there! I suppose they've spent at least the last 3 months in an indoor-style cage so perhaps they're just not used to having an outsidey bit?

I'm not worrying ....yet!
