Clucking_Mad
I am after some advice my mum has rescued 2 hens that have been dumped in a friends back garden and some nasty neighbours of hers kept coming into the back garden and shooting at them with pellet guns and chasing them baseball bats. I don't know the breed as of yet and we have taken them to the vets to get check out. Unfortunatly it turned out that one of them had peritonitis and had to be put to sleep which has upset us all greatly. However the other one has been given the all clear and she lays lovely blue eggs but I would say that she has only recently started to lay as she still looks quite young. I myself have been keeping chickens for just over a year but this hen does something that I have never seen before so some advice would be great. Every so often she lowers her knickers squats a little and moves her vent like she is just about to have a poo but nothing happens and then she walks away. She seems to be in good health I gave her a good check over the vent is clear and clean she had a very small amount of poo on her knickers which i removed for her. She has no lice or mites her comb is bright red and so are her wattles. She is very alert and bright eyed and gives a very good peck as I found out so I was wondering if this meant there was something wrong, has the vet missed something or is it just an unusal behaviour of hers? She is slowly getting used to being handle but after what she has been through it must be tough for her to trust humans. Thank for reading and any advice would be greatly apprieciated Laura x

Clucking_Mad
Unfortunatly I don't have the room for her to live with me but my parents have brought an eglu with run and since her friend had to be put to sleep they have now got her another friend who is POL and there has been a few little tiffs but they are getting on alright and its improving day by day. My dad is also smitten with them and wants to make sure they have the best life possible so is now in the process of building a 9metre by 9metre walk in run for the two of them. I hate that there are people out there who could be so cruel to an animal that is so sweet and can't defend themselves it makes me so mad but the good news is that the one that has survived is now going to have a lovely home with a new friend and i'm always on hand to help my parents out with anything they need.
