I agree with you ..Much rather have my chickens doing chickeny things and providing me with far better eggs than any supermarket .

Would they rather have them back in cages so they can monitor what they eat?

I agree too. A battery egg where hens have been fed chemicals is surely not better!

Hm, eggs from hens kept in gardens in New York - one of the biggest cities in the world, in America the land of cars with 3 litre engines and minimal concerns regarding emissions. Do they still use leaded petrol there, or have they gone over to unleaded? Any US forumites able to comment on that? I do wonder if that has contributed to the problem. Would be interesting to see if eggs from London back yard hens were the same, and to then compare them to garden hens from other areas of the UK
