Mrs Beaky still has a cold or something.....

Recommended Posts

Poor Mrs Beaky is still poorly. Vet bills are really starting to add up now :!: She's had two antibiotic injections, five days of twice daily oral antibiotics(tablets which have to be crushed and then mixed with water then administered by myself with a syringe morning and night - not such an easy job with a wriggly chicken :!: ) and today I took her back to the vets again as we don't seem to be getting on top of it so she had an anti-inflammatory injection and has got another five day course of oral antibiotics (this time a liquid). The bill is well over £100 so far :!::!::!: Just hoping we can finally knock it on the head and hoping that the other girls dont all end up catching it :(

Oh dear you're having a bit of a run of it at the mo!!! Can you keep her isolated?? I seem to remember one of your other girls being poorly in an earlier thread??

It is difficult and can be expensive when chickens need the vet...but what else can we do but try our best!? I had a poorly girl earlier this year who sadly after all attempts by myself and the vet didn't make it :( But I know I tried everything I could. Also lost a girl a little while before that to an impacted crop :( So I can guess how your feeling.

Let's hope your vet has got the treatment right this time!! They seem to have to use guess work alot with chickens unless they are avian trained. Keep us posted!

Best wishes for Mrs Beaky.

Thanks for the moral support. Yes, it was Betty who had a bit of a cold first, but she seems to have responded very well to the antibiotics and seems to have pretty much recovered (touch wood). I think Mrs Beaky probably had it before Betty, but unfortunately it was very stop/start with her so in the beginning so I delayed taking her to the vets. I could kick myself now - I should have taken them both together right at the start. Still, you live and learn. Fingers crossed we will get on top of it in the end but I really don't think this wet weather has helped at all. I do want to do my best for them so as they are such dear little things.

Well, today, dare I say it, Mrs Beaky seems a little bit better :) I've given her her last dose of the tablet antibiotic and tomorrow we move on to the liquid - yippee I only have to give her that once a day :!: Only thing is, I have to mix up the medicine with a little bit of mash/pellet porridge and give it to her - easier said than done when there are four other hungry beaks trying to get at it :!: Never mind, I'm sure I'll manage somehow :!: By the way, this little bottle of antibiotics for five days is costing £33 :!: I think it must be as valuable as gold so better not waste any :!:

Oh they are a worry for sure!!!!! I must say I've learned alot in the year I've had my pekins and I really get a feeling for when something is up/one of them is not right!! There's nothing like experience is there?! I'm dreading the winter...these couple of cold days have been a reminder of more of the same!!

Wow those antibiotics must be something else....I paid £3.35 for a bottle of baytril to dose 3 of my girls for a week, when they had colds and coughs recently!!! Are you sure they didn't bill you with the decimal point in the wrong place???? :?

Prehaps Mrs Beaky could have her own private breakfast?? Mine love their pellets made in to a warm mash type porridge with water!! Please let us know how she goes!!
