soft shell - problem??

Recommended Posts

My 2 year old Amber star has just laid a soft shell egg before she went to bed. She laid a normal one yesterday and seems fine in herself. She always has oyster shell grit available in the run but also FRs. She's never done it before, is it something to worry about? I've been trying to read up on them but can't decide whether to worry or not.

it could be that she laid them to close togeather for the time of year an egg needs about 13-14 hours of day light for calcium to be turned into egg shell and we're getting less the 8 at the moment also as a hen gets older it can have trouble converting calcium into a form that the body can use. a few meal worms wouldn't hurt as a treat they contain an amino acid that helps with calcium conversion life guard tonic in the drinking water every now and again if softies become a regular thing is a good idea
